A very close match! The difference in average grades was 151 which meant that Weymouth had to win 4.5-1.5. They got off to a good start with wins on boards 2 and 4. Nick got Purbeck off the mark with a draw on board 3. I was under a lot of pressure against Allan but boards 5 and 6 looked pretty even. But then Florence won an even-looking ending against Malcolm and Paul's opponent agreed a draw in a position he was never going to win so we had our 2 points! I managed to briefly have a drawn ending but then immediately chose the wrong plan and Allan won the ensuing N + 2P v N + P ending.

A match that could have gone
A match that could have gone either way, but perhaps decided on board 5 where Malcolm tried to win a game unnecessarily and just ended up going from a simple draw to a lost ending in a couple of moves. Andrej did well to hold on bottom board though both sides missed simple wins. Such matches are often decided by the finest of margins. Well done Purbeck and best of luck in the next round.
